Unknown Mortal Orchestra have announced the release of a new single titled ‘Layla’,
Taken from the double album V, which is due out in March, is said to draw inspiration from the decadent habits of West Coast pop music, classics, and Hawaiian Hapa-haole music.
The release of ‘Layla’ comes with a cinematic video, directed by Vira-Lata, that is part one of a sequence that looks at documenting the tales of two women.
However, ‘Layla’ is not the first teaser from the new album, as the band previously released ‘I Killed Captain Cook’.
“V” is set to be their first double album, with frontman Ruban Nielson taking stock of his situation over the past three years within the record’s theme. During the pandemic’s beginning, Nielson’s brother Kody travelled from New Zealand to Palm Springs to help. But one of their Hawaiian uncles started showing health issues, and Nielson recognised he was encountering a more acute feeling of mortality. He put aside his recordings to be with him and helped his mother and another of her brothers move from New Zealand and Portland to Hawai’i. Soon after, he reunited with his brother, and they travelled back to Palm Springs, where the tracks were brought together with the assistance of his father, Chris Nielson (saxophone/flute), and longstanding fellow Jake Portrait.
“In Hawaii, everything shifted off of me and my music. Suddenly, I was spending more time figuring out what others need and what my role is within my family. I also learned that things I thought were true of myself are bigger than I thought. My way of making mischief – that’s not just me – that’s my whole Polynesian side. I thought I was walking away from music to focus on family, but the two ended up connecting.”
