Emmet Scanlan’s latest EP, “These are the dreams. This is the life”, gets straight to point by kicking in the door with ‘Over Again’. An infectious, swinging track that rails against the lies that repeat within the track’s narrative.
A folk-funk twister of a short offering, the EP was conceived in London with engineer Raoul Terzi. It calms down by track three, as ‘In Love & Falling’ becomes an occasional duet between Scanlan and his female vocalist. The lyrics of the EP are dreaming and hard-won, showcasing a talent and craft by pleasure for the songwriter.
There is a touch of The Head and the Heart about track three, but overall the EP is a mix of jazz folk and just plain folk. The structures are great, the vocals are spot on, this could be an enjoyable set to see live in an intimate venue.
“These are the Dreams. This is the Life” is out 27 May.
