19-year-old Nottingham-born Callum Burrows AKA Saint Raymond, played a highly anticipated gig at Dublin’s Academy to a great reaction on Friday. No stranger to The Academy venue, having supported HAIM here over a year ago, it was always going to be interesting to see what the young songwriter could conjure up on his own.
Originally penned for the lower decks of The Academy 2, this over 14’s show allowed most of the crowd be a majority of teenage girls, swooning over his soft vocal tones in ‘Letting Go’ and ‘Everything She Wants’. About five songs in, out came the insatiably catchy ‘I Want You’ and latest single ‘Wild Heart’, which some might recall from the current FIFA soundtrack.
Finishing up with ‘Young Blood’ and ‘Ghosts’ before his encore, Saint Raymond seemed to enjoy himself and the crowd were feeding off that. In truth, a little more interaction with the crowd could have brought this show to a whole new level.
A three song encore that featured the reminiscent college love song ‘As We Are Now’ and ‘Fall At You Feet’, Saint Raymond vowed that he will “Definitely (be) coming back”, but whether he will fill a venue bigger than The Academy will surely depend on a stronger sounding début album.
