Music | Review: Amber Run at Whelan’s 12/11/2014

Amber Run made their first headline appearance at Whelan’s on Wednesday night, a show that had the intimate upstairs feeling like a living room to match the much hyped about act’s setlist of emotion.

Opening the show were Donegal’s Little Hours, who had a tale or two about the previous gig in Kilkenny, which seemed to warm them up for tonight’s show.  An amazing voice coupled with acoustic melodies and piano intricacies served very well with the audience.

When Amber Run arrived, the haunting and yet beautiful intro of ‘I Found’ rang about the room, if it was a church you’d be left speechless.  There is something about the vocoder-esque vocals and the heartbeat rhythms that make Amber Run stand out a bit more than most.

Lyrically, they’re equally as good in this department.   Tracks that stood out seemed to be the better known ones.  A career rising set that featured EP releases ‘Pilot’, ‘Heaven’, ‘Noah’, ‘Spark’ and finally ‘Little Ghost’, which was the band’s first encore according to frontman Joe Keogh.

A bigger venue beckons, not surprising for a band that toured with fast-rising Kodaline recently.
