Music | Review: George Ezra at The Academy, Dublin 13/10/2014

George Ezra wowed a sold-out crowd in The Academy, Dublin on Monday night.  This was the young ‘Budapest’ songwriter’s first gig in Ireland since his appearance at Longitude during the summer.

Support on the night came from young songstress Rae Morris, who endeared herself to the crowd early on with charm and a fabulous set.  Sounding much like Ellie Goulding singing a London Grammar tracks, Morris’s best track was ‘Do You Even Know’, which was a dreamy and celestial.

When George Ezra arrived on stage, he was clearly taken back by the sizable audience to which he was about to play to.  “My Name is George Ezra and this my lovely band, we’re gonna play some songs for you” Ezra introduced before playing the opening upbeat rhythms of ‘Cassy O’.

The audience was mixed but the majority were young fans of the deep voiced songwriter.  Charm levels went through The Academy roof when remarked that it was “The perfect place to start.”

Other tracks on the night included ‘Listen To The Man’, ‘Blame It On Me’, and ‘Barcelona’.  Ezra then went solo for a few songs.  After playing ‘Leaving It Up To You’, he complimented their backing vocals by saying, ‘Forget the choir, you should come with e on tour”.

Best was left to last with ‘Budapest’, ‘Did You Hear The Rain’ and a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’.

Fantastic show by George Ezra, support was top-notch.  A bigger Irish show in 2015 beckons!
