Music | Review: “Candour” by Derek Ellard

Derek Ellard has released his début EP “Candour”, as things continue to pick up for the young Galway man following his Guinness Amplify performances.

With nearly 100 gigs nationwide in 2010 he eventually felt the need to focus and kicked the day job to work as a live musician full-time while studying Sound Production during the day.

Some of those gigs included notable support slots to The Unthanks, The Kanyu Tree, The Cast of Cheers, and John Corabi.

Ellard’s début is a soft mix of dance inspired acoustic tracks.  ‘Indiana’ serves well as an opener, and picks up after about a minute to sound like a Kelly Jones from Stereophonics cover.

‘Dredge The Sea’ and ‘Letter to The Queen’ have more fire in the belly upon listening.  ‘Anon’ is a song that would make your head turn at an open mic, classic heart-felt songwriting by the Galway man.

“Candour” is out now on Bandcamp.
