Future Islands have returned to mark an important milestone, treating fans to a new album of celebratory significance as the band hit 20 years. “From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth” is set to be a collection of “alternate hits, rarities, and fan favorites” that will highlight the sounds that made them who they are.
Due for release on 22 May this year, the band have shared not one but two tracks to come from the LP in the form of ‘Sail’ and ‘Find Love’.Speaking on the title of the record and the lyric behind it, bassist William Cashion said;
“I’ve always loved the imagery of that lyric, The hole in the floor is the everyday, but the fountain is the magic that happens when the life you dreamed about actually becomes the one you’re living. It’s the dream and the reality existing in the same room.” A well-known Tennessee Williams quote talks of this kind of duration – “time is the longest distance between two places.”

The album follows the group’s journey from ‘humble origins toward ever-widening horizons,’ putting together “twenty songs for twenty years, four members of the band, four sides of vinyl,” as it was put. No doubt that it will be an all encompassing for a band that has always been comfortable with the various peaks their music has produced.
To coincide with the release, Future Islands will play a special run of dates in North Carolina and Baltimore in the United States to celebrate. Details of which will follow in due course on the band’s website and email lists.
“From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth” will be released on 22 May 2026 on 4AD.
