‘Midwest’ is the latest arrival of a new single by Australian indie-pop band Vacations.
The song has been produced by the band’s lead vocalist Campbell Burns and John Velasquez. It’s a follow-up to the band’s triumphant single “Next Exit”, and both tracks showcase Vacations’ unique guitar pop style that blends influences from various artists and genres, resulting in a nostalgic and refreshing sound.
Nicole Lipp, a skilled director based in Los Angeles, was the creative mind behind the music video for ‘Midwest’. Working alongside Jake Johnson, the talented bassist of Vacations, Lipp brought a unique vision to life. Johnson shared his thoughts on the process, shedding light on the intricacies of bringing the video to fruition.
“I’ve always felt like dance is one of the best ways to express the inner emotional state and framing that around a phone box, this outdated and difficult form of distance communication, was really fun. The return to long periods of touring has been a really bitter-sweet experience of being apart from loved ones, and trying desperately to make things work despite the distance. That feeling of being in love or a crush is one of the most wonderful, powerful, and terribly confusing emotions we can experience and we wanted to try and touch on that tempest visually.”
Jake Johnson, Vacations.
The band has been gaining momentum, recently completing a sold-out UK headline tour and performing at The Great Escape in Brighton. They will continue with a full US co-headline tour with fellow Australian band Last Dinosaurs, scheduled for October and November.
Vacations will also be taking the stage at two major festivals soon. On 25 August, they will be performing at All Points East in London, alongside The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. W|hile on 30 September, they will be sharing the stage with Maggie Rogers at the All Things Go Festival in Washington, DC.
