Lucy Gaffney is a musician from Belfast who began releasing solo music in 2020, which included two lo-fi tracks produced by the masterful James Skelly of The Coral. In 2023, Gaffney’s latest single, ‘ Daydream In Tokyo’ is a stunning indie-pop masterpiece that captures the essence of the vivid journey toward an upcoming second EP.
Experience a captivating journey through vivid imagery with this song written during Gaffney’s time in Liverpool. The inspiration for this song draws from neon-lit Tokyo streets and the film Lost In Translation, even referencing singing “Thirteen” by Big Star in a Tokyo karaoke bar.
“I’ve always adored and been fascinated by its cinematography,” says Gaffney. “There’s so much depth in the mystery and ambiguity of discovering a foreign place. I find it hard not to completely relate to every scene. I can’t write unless there’s something inspiring me visually, so I wanted it to capture the aesthetic of the movie and, in a similar way, translate a relatability in everyday thoughts and relationships between people.”

It serves as an escape from the mundane and emphasizes the power of a strong sense of place to combat the everyday.
The track was inspired by Bowie, The La’s, The Pretenders, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, and girl in red. Proving to be a sincere, and optimistic number showcasing Gaffney’s unique sound.
