Film | “Expect a love story with humour and heart set in a beautiful place with some great music.” – An interview with ‘Songs For Amy’ star Sean Maguire

‘Songs for Amy’ is a love story set in the West of Ireland and New York, where we find Musician Sean O’Malley (Sean Maguire) trying to redeem himself with bride-to-be, Amy (Lorna Anderson).

The movie flicks back-and-forth from Sean and his bandmates recording the songs in a studio to different parts of the story.  After a debauched stag do, their relationship and Sean’s future happiness hanging in the balance, his plan is to write the perfect album of songs for her, with the help and hindrance from his misfit band mates.

I asked lead actor Sean Maguire about his time shooting the movie.

RM:  As the lead actor. How were you cast for the movie? Is there a long casting process?

SM: “I was sent the script , and then Fiona and her sister Marie came out to LA and we met and got on pretty much straight away.”

RM: The movie hits Irish screens early this May, Are you looking forward to its release? or In your own words, what can viewers expect in Songs for Amy?

SM: “I’m excited to see it finally get an outing. I think audiences can expect a love story with humour and heart set in a beautiful place with some great music.”

RM: “What was it like working on “Songs for Amy”?  Was it challenging?”

SM: “Making an indie movie is always a challenge but it was so much fun to hang out with that gang in Galway.”

RM: “Would you describe the film as charming? maybe even as a dark comedic tale of love and woe?”

SM: “It’s actually a tough film to put a label on it’s all those things. It’s certainly not a conventional rom com.”

RM: “The soundtrack was obviously a key part of the movie, how do you feel the songs captured the emotion of the scenes?”

SM: “I think the soundtrack is almost a character in the movie. It’s pivotal and huge gratitude goes to Ulton Conlon and Jim McKee for providing what I think are beautiful songs.”

RM: “What is it like working with Konrad Begg?”

SM: “Konrad is a terrific collaborator and an extremely talented director we really got on really well. Konrad & I are hoping to work together on a new project soon.”

RM: “2014 looks set to be a good year for Irish cinema, with the likes of “Calvary” and “Frank” receiving great reviews along with “Songs for Amy”.  What is your opinion on the rising/current state of Irish film?”

SM: “I think Ireland’s got a rich history of making great films but we can always do more, there’s so many talented writers directors and actors the problem is usually lack of funding.”
