Music | A few things to expect at Sea Sessions 2014

Summer has well and truly landed, and with it the countdown to Ireland’s biggest beach party.

This June 27 / 28 / 29 festival goers will head to the shores of Donegal for a mix of surfing and skating, music, beach sports and partying that has become the Sea Sessions festival, which  will celebrate its seventh year on the beach in Bundoran.

Tasty Selection of Craft Beers

This year the festival has teamed up with O’Hara’s Craft Beers to provide a selection of craft beers also.

“We’ve really got into this craft beer malarky and have brewed our own Sea Sessions Pale Ale, which even has a bit of Atlantic Sea weed in it!!” said Daniel Browne one of the festival organisers.

Quiksilver Expression Session

The Quiksilver Expression Session will once again be the biggest cash prize in Irish Surfing with Australian Noah lane expected to ruffle the feathers of last year’s winner William Alioti from the Reunion Islands.

“It’s a very spectator friendly format, so even if you aren’t that big into your surfing you can appreciate the skills these guys have. The Quiksilver Expression Session is the only surf event in Ireland to be sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals Europe. It’s a great event and a real focal point for Irish surfing”, said Pete Craig another of the organisers.

RTÉ 2FM Unsigned Sessions

After a record level of entry in the Unsigned Sessions this year the short list of ten acts have been chosen and sent to 2FM’s Louise McSharry, whose new music show on the station will be whittling down to the final four acts that will appear at the festival.

“I don’t envy Louise. It was a hard task to get it down to just ten acts, picking four is going to be very difficult” said festival booker Ray O’Donoghue.

The excitement was really building in Bundoran this week with the arrival and construction of the Sea Sessions half Pipe ramp for skaters and BMX’ers. The specially commissioned ramp is going to be located on the promenade overlooking the beach and right beside the 2FM broadcast unit.

“2FM Beat Shack”

Not only are 2FM going to be broadcasting all weekend from Sea Sessions, they are also taking over the Dance stage, which they have re- branded the ‘2FM Beat Shack’ for the weekend.

“There’s an amazing line up for the stage and we have a few tricks up our sleeves for the experience we are planning to deliver”, said Laura Beatty from 2FM.

Vodafone Stage and Main Stage Breakdown

Aside from the 2FM Beat Shack there will also be the Vodafone stage overlooking the beach which will see the likes of Ella Eyre, the Minutes and loads more acts pack out the stage which is always over brimming with beach party atmosphere.

The Main Stage as always will be the main attraction. And with acts like The Dandy Warhols, The Strypes, Leftfield, Kelis and many more taking to the stage it’s easy to see the attraction.

“We really are looking forward to the event this year. It’s hard to believe that this will be our seventh year. We have learned a lot over the years and we are looking forward to having the best party we have ever thrown. We know we need to keep innovating and keeping the festival fresh and good value”, said Daniel Browne.

Supporting a Good Cause

Every year Sea Sessions has chosen a charity to assist. Over the years we have helped build houses in Haiti, given support to men with depression and helped take children with Autism surfing. This year we have decided to work with a great local charity Billy’s World. The charity is a vision by the family of young Billy Byrne who passed away last year.

“The family want to build a holiday park outside Carrick on Shannon for families of children with mobility and other needs where the whole family can go together and enjoy holidays. It will be a first for Ireland and a project we are happy to help”, said Daniel
