Music | Clonmel Junction Festival announce Music Extravaganza

2014’s Festival music programme will showcase local, national and international artsts over ten days in Clonmel commencing on 4 July.

The feature event of the music programme is undoubtedly the free outdoor concert “Classics from 1984”, which will take place in Parnell Street from 9pm – 11pm on Saturday 12 July.  This event, which is sponsored by long time festival supporters Bulmers, will see 15 Irish musicians perform, with support from the visiting French band La Marmaille, performing a selection of the great rock and pop numbers from the ‘enigmatic’ year that was 1984.  Rock classics such as “Purple Rain”, Born in the USA” and “Jump” will be joined by pop hits “Like a Virgin”, “Thriller” and “Karma Chameleon”.

Trad fans will have the opportunity to see four of Ireland’s finest musicians perform together.  Máirtín O’Connor, Donal Lunny, Róisín Elsafty and Zoe Conway will perform in Old St Mary’s Church on 9 July, while local favourites Rattle the Boards and special guest Des Dillon line up for a Monday night slot in Baker’s Bar

The programme includes a visit of the ever popular troubadour Paddy Casey on Sunday 6 July and a double bill with Limerick’s Hermitage Green and rootsy rock outfit Uproot Hootenanny, on Thursday 10 July, also in Bakers.

On July 8 Jazz aficionados have the mouthwatering prospect of seeing Louis Stewart and Jim Doherty in the intimate surroundings of the Donoughmore Club, while on 9 July in Bakers, world music lovers will have the opportunity to hear Elykia playing a mix of Congolese Rumba and Soukous. There will also be several opportunities to see the 2014 festival resident band La Marmaille, a fanfar from the South of France, that will have their feature concert at Vive La France, a celebration of French cuisine and music at the Beeches Restaurant on July 11.

One of the strengths of Junction Festival has been its nurturing of young talent in the town. Two years ago Kate Twohig made her debut at the festival. This year Kate brings her recently formed sextet of piano and stings with guitar and percussion to Clonmel on 6 July for a concert in the intimate surroundings of Marlfield Church.

In addition to these feature events there are nightly sessions and gigs on the Bulmers Original Music Trail across the ten days, which include The Raven Blues in Mulcahy’s, Super Soul Machine at The Posthouse, two guest DJ Saturday nights at Moran’s, D&G at Liam Daly’s, Zhora at The Piper and Kenny Ryder and his Band at The Coachman.
