Big September  play Longford’s NewC Festival this weekend, so I had a quick chat with the band ahead of their slot at the one day music festival.

RobMoro: So how did Big September meet?

Well Dave, Cill, Scotty & Danny were in a band for a few years, then the lads asked me to join 2 years ago and Big September was born. We had all been mates since school and were hanging around jamming at sessions and all so it was kind of written in the stars.

RobMoro: A lot of bands have different songwriting techniques, how do Big September work the writing process?

Since the day I got a guitar I was writing songs, it’s always been a big part of my life. The lads are the same, especially Dave. He has tonnes of tunes in his bag. As soon as we started jamming together it was easy, I was writing a few a week and the lads had some already….we just kept going until we knew we had a collection of songs we felt would blow people away, booked the studio and in we went. It was all very natural. Good songs are what it’s all about, you can dress a band up or portray a group as something appealing but at the end of the day it all comes down to the tunes.

RobMoro: So your influences must be a bit varied and older given your sound?

It’s a real mixed bag in this band, we all have different influences besides the usual Beatles, Stones, Oasis etc. I’m big into The Clash, The Jam, all that powerful stuff, and I’m hugely influenced by the late 60’s and also the Britpop era. The Big September sound is just us though, when the five of us bounce off each other anything can come out, it’s not something that easy to define really.

RobMoro: NewC Fest is new on the festival circuit, how much are you looking forward to it?

We can’t wait to play NewCfest. It’s a great line up and it’s destined to be a big one! The whole festival circuit is just a great buzz, it’s what all bands look forward to. Like a celebration of the seasons or something ha ha. Everyone just seems to be on a different buzz altogether. It’s a happy time to be gigging.

RobMoro: It haa been all go for you guys since the album launch in Dublin, what was the show like?

We just launched the album in The Academy to a huge crowd, it was a really special night for us. A massive thank you to everyone who made it the gig it was. Everyone singing the words back to us and just getting off on the songs, it was amazing.

RobMoro: So would venues like The Academy be your favorite? or would the festivals suit you better right now?

They’re all good, it just depends on the crowd! Were not partial to anywhere really, we love them all. If there’s a good crowd, it’ll be a good gig.

RobMoro: What about the gig rider?

A chessboard, a nice selection of cheeses, and a good book each. Ha, ah no we just get the usual few crates of beer and that. If there’s a free dinner we’ll snap it up too.

RobMoro: People will try to find your music after NewC Festival this weekend, where can they get hold of your albums and singles?

Our singles are all sold out on hard copy but can be downloaded from all digital platforms. The album “Ballroom Addicts” can be bought in HMV and Tower Records and is available to download too.

RobMoro:  What is next for Big September?

We have a busy summer ahead with the festivals all over Ireland but after that we are planning to play some dates abroad and do another big headline show towards the end of the year. We are already writing the second album so we’d love to get back recording as soon as were ready.
