News | Chief Justice receives Distinguished Fellowship from Griffith College

Chief Justice Susan Denham has received a Distinguished Fellowship Award from Griffith College, becoming the eleventh person to do so since 2004.  The award presented at Griffith College’s annual graduation ceremony.

The largest private third level institution in Ireland presents its highest award to those who have ‘contributed to making Ireland a better society’.  Former recipients of the award include President Mary McAleese and Nobel Laureates John Hume and Prof. Seamus Heaney.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Diarmuid Hegarty, President of Griffith College, said: “Justice and education are among the core pillars that shape our society.  The benefit of good education and justice in practice is that the citizenry is imbued with the civic responsibility, culture, mores, morality and values that create an unbreakable belief in the sanctity of basic human rights.  Justice and education also go hand-in-hand in any progressive society that seeks to give its citizens the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Prof. Hegarty also added: “In her work and life Chief Justice Denham has always been a steadfast flagbearer in the cause of justice and ensuring that our system of justice protects the basic human rights of our citizens. It is with great pride that we welcome Justice Denham as a Distinguished Fellow.”

Griffith College also offered two awards for Professional Excellence at the ceremony.  Michael Cawley, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer of Ryanair received one award for his part in helping the low fares airline success.  While former CEO of Central Applications Office, Martin Newell received an award for his contribution to higher education through the organisation.
