Belfast’s Pleasure Beach are a welcome addition to the Irish music circuit. Good words to be said about their show with Ezra Furman have shaped them up nicely to support All Tvvins in the same venue, and now destined to open for The Vaccines in The Olympia Theatre early next month. But what about their debut “Dreamer To The Dream” EP and does it hold even further promise for the band?
Well their debut echoes that acclaim. First track ‘Go’ is catchy with a strong paced rhythm, met with low flying synth, and then the occasional emphatic guitar chord. While the lyrics are as manic as the mix of instruments, it’s a great opener.
‘Dreamer To Dawn’ is equally impressive in the same manner, it is more anthemic and reminiscent with some heavier bass-lines powering through. If there is anything to be said for these two tracks, it has to be a rousing statement of intent from the Belfast based quintet.
As for closing track, ‘Hayley’, it has a strong rhythmic structure of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ ‘I Won’t Back Down’ meeting Springsteen’s ‘I’m on Fire’, but slower and more spacious. Mostly due to the floating synth and softer vocals.
The bar has been set for Pleasure Beach, if they continue to rise like the past few months, then it won’t be hard for them to fulfil their destiny.
